A day in the life: Kevin, Service Desk Engineer

In the fast-paced world of information technology, every day presents a new set of challenges and opportunities. To give you an insider’s perspective, we sat down with Kevin, our dedicated Service Desk Engineer. Kevin shared insights into his daily routine, his journey into the IT field, and the passions that fuel his work.

Q: Can you describe a typical day at work for you, Kevin?

A: Sure! My day at RedDoor starts with checking emails and our ticketing system for any new issues reported by clients. I prioritise tasks based on urgency and impact. Once that’s done, I dive into troubleshooting and resolving issues. This could range from network problems to software glitches. I also work on implementing long-term solutions to recurring problems, which ensures our clients experience minimal downtime. Throughout the day, I collaborate with my team, share insights, and brainstorm improvements.

Q: What drew you to a career in IT and what do you enjoy most about it?

A: I’ve always been fascinated by technology, especially computer components like motherboards and graphics cards. The intricacy and functionality of electronic devices captivate me. What I enjoy most about my job is the problem-solving aspect. It’s incredibly satisfying to diagnose an issue and then implement a solution that not only fixes it but also improves the system’s overall performance.

Q: We’ve heard you have an exceptional memory. How does this assist you in your role?

A: My memory helps me retain a vast amount of technical information and recall it quickly when needed. This is particularly useful when dealing with complex systems and troubleshooting issues. It allows me to draw on past experiences and solutions, which speeds up the problem-solving process and enhances customer satisfaction.

Q: What are your passions outside of work?

A: Outside of work I have a great passion for movies. I have a list of films, ranging from classic gems to contemporary masterpieces, that I’m working my way through watching. I approach each movie with the same attention to detail that I do with computer hardware. It’s a way for me to relax and get inspired by different storytelling techniques and visual effects.

Q: Lastly, what advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career in IT?

A: My advice would be to stay curious and never stop learning. The field of IT is constantly evolving, so it’s important to keep up with the latest technologies and trends. Develop a strong foundation in problem-solving and don’t be afraid to tackle challenging issues. And most importantly, find an area that you’re passionate about and dive deep into it. Passion and curiosity will drive your success in this field.
